Lt. Gen. Robert Neller never met Cpl. Eric Lueken, who was killed in Iraq in 2006. But he wears a memorial bracelet with Lueken’s name engraved on it every day. He says he wears it to remember the responsibility he bears as a three-star general.

Lueken was 23 when he died. A native of Indiana, over 800 people showed up to pay their respects at his funeral. Over 4,000 lined the streets when his body returned home. He joined the Marine Corps to see the world, but according to friends, also devoted himself to being the best Marine he could be. He had already deployed once to Afghanistan when he deployed to Iraq. And his death not only had an effect on Lt. Gen. Neller, it also may have helped save countless other lives.
