For Our Present Persecution, A Fitting Historical Milieu

Proclamation-1

In the wake of the Supreme Court decision on same-sex “marriage”, the utter failure of legal protections for Christian businesses, and a growing ambient hostility in the culture to all things Catholic, voices in many Catholic circles are muttering darkly about the days of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the monarchs who famously protestantized England over the dead bodies of thousands of Catholics.

These were periods of dramatic carnage and martyrdom, which is relatively easy to conceptualize because it is concrete and fleshy. It is also a clearly delineated situation; the good guys are getting their heads chopped off, and the bad guys are explicitly and absolutely outlawing the Faith.

The trouble with comparing our situation to that is, for now at least, that the Little Sisters of the Poor are not dangling from Tyburn Tree; Archbishop Cordileone is not being racked in the Tower; Ann Barnhardt is not being slowly crushed to death under a large pile of rocks; and you, Gentle Reader, are not preparing a plate of sandwiches to bring to the occupant of your home’s very own priest hole…………………….MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
